Back to swimming

So today I started swimming again. To be honest was not sure that my shoulder will allow me to enjoy swimming. I have pain in my left shoulder from E&Y. An air conditioner was just on my head which resulted in problems with my left shoulder muscle. That is why I usually can not swim long distances. It showed up in Edmonton when I reached swimming 1.5 km per day. I had to reduce the distance to 400 m. And in last May I stopped swimming at all. As I love swimming, I was missing it a lot. But my shoulder....

However, I decided to start swimming again. I can not stand... And one more reason was recommendation of our family doctor to have more active lifestyle. So that was a good reason to push me toward swimming again! Swam 300 m today morning. Shoulder tried to interrupt me. But by changing my swimming style I managed it.

Below is almost perfect technique of freestyle swimming. I adore his style! He does not spend too much energy, which is good for swimming long distances. And I tried it today, which helped me to swim without my shoulder pain. And the amazing part is that this style looks slow, but actually you swim faster. Unbelievable...!!!! But it is a fact!

P.S. My boss also promised to join me. Let's see...

New product from Apple - iPad mini

Yesterday Apple introduced its new product - iPad mini. The commercial says that it is the same with iPad 3, but smaller and lighter. To be honest I am skeptic regarding this product. iPad is very useful and well sized product. Why to produce smaller size of the same product. I know that they are trying to handle the market occupied bu Kindle and Nexus 7. But they are cheaper than iPad mini. The latter will be sold starting from $329, but price of Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 start from $200.  Looks like Apple made its first marketing mistake... The time will show the results. Below is the commercial of Mini iPad.

Last debate between Obama and Romney

So, I am still enjoying with presidential debates in the US. Yesterday there was a last debate between Obama and Romney. I believe that this debate is one of the must seen. Again Obama smashed and crashed Romney. Obama is my most favorite orator and politician. I adore this guy!

And here is the video of the debate. Please watch and enjoy!

P.S. I started believing that all republicans a mentally retarded like George W. Bush... It is my opinion and this may not reflect the reality...))))

Snowy, icy and cold Calgary

As you understood from the heading of the post winter came to Calgary. This week gonna snow almost everyday. Today was peak of the snowfall around 15 cm. Here is a picture from today's traffic jam:

To be honest I was really surprised when stuck in the traffic today morning. The roads are snowy and slippy, but it is not a reason for Canadians drive slower. Last winter I spent in Edmonton and I have never stuck in a traffic because of snowfall. Hope after couple of days people start driving faster...

As you noticed from the picture above I started using Instagram. It is very helpful for a person who has an iphone. And the soft allows you to edit pictures. Just switch on your fantasy. Below I am sharing some winter pictures from Calgary.

Last night
Last night, snow covered my BBQ
Our parking lot at the office
In the last picture my car is in left corner after Nissan Pathfinder. To be honest Venza pleasantly surprised me with its behavior on ice. AWD switches on when the car starts slipping. And it's easy to control it on snowy road.

By the way snow is still falling and is going to snow until this afternoon. God bless us in this cold country!

I got CGMA designation

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants have joined together to form a joint venture which powers a new designation for management accountants, the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). The CGMA is designed to elevate management accountingIt sets a new standard for global recognition of management accounting by building on the longstanding foundations and thought leadership of the AICPA and CIMA. So, in a short word two giants of accounting industry created a designation which allows CIMA to enter to the US market. Currently CGMA eliminates examination for AICPA members. To qualify, members must meet one of the CGMA experience requirement options below:

  • Three years of financial (including internal audit)  or management accounting experience in business, industry, or government, or
  • Two years of financial or management accounting experience plus one year in public accounting, or
  • Three years of financial/management accounting experience on a consulting basis, or
  • Three years in a management accounting role focused on the management and operation of an accounting firm
However, beginning January, 2015, a qualifying examination will also be required. Designation fee is $150.

Taking into account such easy requirements for the AICPA members and my wide experience in corporate accounting I decided to apply for this new designation. I filled an online application and paid the fee. By filling the application you allow them to access your information at the AICPA. So, after background check they sent me an e-mail where stated that I am eligible for the designation as I my experience and AICPA membership meets the actual requirements. So I am now CPA and CGMA...

Again anniversary 5 years passed from wedding party

As you already noticed October is full of holidays for our family. 18th is the date when we first met with my wife, 20th is the date of our wedding party with her, and 28th is birthday of my son. So last half of October we have lots of reasons to celebrate.

So, today is fifth year as we are family. I will say happy family. What we need else from our Lord for happiness?! We have love in our hearts, two brilliant kids, ceiling over our heads, eating in our kitchen and we are living in a normal country. We are thankful to the God for everything.

And here is a picture from our wedding party:

Second debate between Obama and Romney

As I already noticed before I became fun of the US presidential debates. And here is second debate between Obama and Romney.

Analysts say that Obama was the winner in this debate. And I completely agree with this statement. Obama crashed Romney like potato... WELL DONE!!!

2012: Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year

After moving to Canada I started interesting with quality of pictures/video of the nature, some kind of illusion. As I adore drawing, I never accepted capturing and film making as an art. I used to believe that an art should be created by hands and your fantasy, but not by machine like camera. My ideas not applicable to movie making. It is a different story. I am talking about photographs and documentary films. However, last year I recognized that I was wrong, may be because I was way from photographs and documentary films. Now I watch documentary films on a daily basis. The quality of the films is astonishing me...

And couple of days ago I read in my boss's blog about winner of Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of 2012 Paul Nicklen, who is CanadianVeolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Worldwide. Below his talk in TED:

He is amazing man and his talk touched my heart. I always highly respected people who tries and keeps high standard in their profession. In addition of this he cares about wildlife and their our future.

Today 11 years passed from my first meeting with my spouse Esmira. We first met on October 18, 2001 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Now we celebrate 11th anniversary in Calgary, Canada. After 11 years we have happy family with two kids. Together we passed from lots of things. The final hard decision was when we decided to move to Canada. It was a serious decision, which changed all our life. I always feel her support and breath in my back. Thanks to her for everything.

Here is a picture taken in December 2005 during boat tour in Baku. I have edited it a little bit.

Balaban music or hunger for native music

Last days whole day I am listening Alihan Samedov, a balaban player. Balaban is double-reed wind instrument about 35 cm long with seven finger holes and one thumb hole. It look like as following:

It is very cultural and very native for me. I grew up listening such music and actually I miss it now. To be honest when I was in Azerbaijan my national music was never such important for me. It was just usual. I used to hear it in TV, radio, restaurants, and almost everywhere .. But after the immigration I started feeling some kind of emptiness, hunger for my national music. Now mugham, balaban has an importance in my life. I do not believe that I can live without them. Mugham is one of the folk musical composition mainly sang in Azerbaijan and not only. My most favorite mugham singer is Mansum Ibrahimov. He also plays Majnun in "Leyli and Majnun" opera of Uzeyir Hajibeyov. This opera was unique for its time by combining Western and Eastern cultures.

Alihan Samedov has his personal website where you can listen him. Just click on the music section in the website. Enjoy!

Living in English speaking country

How is the life in the environment where people do not speak in your native language? It is one of the most popular question prospective immigrants ask themselves. Usually for families with kids it is more important. I believe that after living almost a year in Canada I can answer to this question. It is really easy! So, take it easy! I will try to go into details and prove my conclusion. Of course all conclusions are based on my own experience. Therefore, each person may have own experience which is different.

First of all when you move to a new country you try to find  people who are familiar with your culture, or came from the same country you did. After having some community who speaks same language, you almost loose the need speaking in English with them at all. What happened with me, when I moved to Canada my friend from university met us at the airport. And then he introduced us to other Azerbaijani Turks living in Edmonton. So daily use of English was limited to my work and shopping in Edmonton. Taking into account that most people prefer sending e-mails instead of discussing personally, so I was not using English too much at work. As regard the shopping the only words you need to say is type of the payment card when you are paying for the goods purchased. So, does not look like you are ling in English speaking environment, 90% of your talks are in you native language. I mean in your family, with local friends.

At some point I started feeling that I am not using English in my daily life anymore. It happened after I moved to Calgary. As you aware my boss mmw is Russian. Taking into account that I am almost fluent in Russian we use Russian in our communication. So, what is the picture at the end, I am speaking Azeri Turkish at home and friends, Russian with my boss... Where is English? Rare use of English weakens my speaking. And how I can say that I am living in English speaking country?! Looks like some actions should be taken to prevent degradation of my English.

I remember couple years ago when I watched a documentary about Chinese people living in NYC without understanding English I was really surprised. Now I am completely sure that without having English you may survive in English speaking country!

P.S. One of guys who moved to Toronto 4 months ago also said that he almost forgot English...

Fights for US presidency...

My interest in US presidents started after listening Obama's speech at the previous campaign. To be honest not all of the US presidents was such smart in my opinion. Therefore, listening such a smart guy who was in that campaign was surprise for me. And next surprise was his election. He is very good public orator and he is smart. Having two abilities makes him best US president I have ever seen. And yesterday he had a debate with Romney. Most of the analysts wrote that Romney left as a winner from the debate. For me he was not self-confident at all. But Obama he was very relaxed and confident what he was saying. You can watch at this debate in video below. Enjoy! I did!
